Batt/Top Combos

Posted by

I am a terrible blog writer- posting so infrequently I would be surprised anyone would notice :) But anyway, I feel I have something to contribute, so here you go.

I was asked by someone in my Ravelry group, "Why would anyone want to have a colorway half as combed top and half as a batt?"

Spinning carded fiber is a different experience than spinning combed fiber. The combed top gives you more distinct colors and a smoother yarn, whereas the batt will have the colors mixed up a bit, and have texture from both the disturbed wool fibers (disturbed as the top is run through the drumcarder) and the noils, silk, sparkle, etc that I add in. Plying these together yields a marvelous yarn- suitable for just about anything.

You can do other fun things, too, such as spin a single with sections of top and sections of batt, and then chain ply it. Or thread ply it. or ply with some other singles. Or cable it. SO many things to try! You can spin each prep separately, and then knit with them, striping in blocks or skinny sections- a wonderful exercise in see just what the differences are.

I am in the process of doing a regular two ply yarn, one ply from the batt portion and one ply from the top (maybe I'll even post here when the yarn is done).
